“Georgia O’Keeffe, 1918.” Photo by Alfred Stieglitz.

I love this Alfred Stieglitz portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe (1918), because it’s a rare image of her at work. I like the way she’s seated, slightly elevated, on a sturdy cushion, her legs drawn up in front of her. With a brush in her right hand, those long tapered fingers of her left hand are wound about her knees.

O’Keeffe is at Lake George, making a watercolor of a foundation planting. Wish I could see enough detail to identify the plant.

This print was given by O’Keeffe to her sister, the well-known collector and socialite Anita O’Keeffe Young, and has remained in private hands until this sale. The photo will be on offer this week, 7 October, in New York, by Sotheby’s auction house. Estimated price is $100/200,000.
